"What controls us?"
They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. (2 Peter 2:19 NLT)
Actions speak louder than words. This is an old saying but one that rings true even today. We use words to talk about our lives but often forget that it's our lives that speak louder than any words we could use.
What are we utterly committed to? What do we live our lives for? Whatever controls us is what we are slaves to. Not what we say but what we do.
We can tell what we are slaves to by a few different factors.
(1) What dominates our thoughts?
We are slaves to that which we think about most often. Want to know if you are a slave to God or something else, what do you think about? Do we think about money? How we can earn more, save more, or use it to buy more? If money dominates our thoughts then we are likely slaves to money. What dominates our thoughts?
(2) What dominates our time?
We are slaves to that which we live our lives for. What we spent out time doing & investing in reveals what we love. Do we spend the majority of our time on us or on others? For us or for others? For God & his kingdom or us?
(3) What dominates our patterns?
We live our lives in patterns. We do things routinely. These routines, patterns, & natural rhythms of our lives show us what we are slaves to. Where do we go everyday? What do we do everyday? Whatever patterns we live in reveals what we are slaves to. Either to God or to us.
So what controls us? What are we slaves to? To God or to us?
