Day 188/365- Psalm 1:1

"The Blessed Life"

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; (Psalm 1:1 ESV)

This Psalm says a lot about what being blessed is really about. Being blessed is something we probably all want. But do we all define it the same?

Being blessed is about being hidden in God. It has everything to do with his Word & his ways. The blessed person is unmovable, planted like a tree by a water source. It is always bearing fruit & it doesn't wither.

Who wouldn't want that life? But this life is not easily acquired. It comes fom not only delighting in the law of the Lord but also keeping oneself from sin. The blessed life involves not walking, standing, or sitting in sin. Do you see the progression there? Walking, standing, sitting. The person who is living the blessed life is not walking with sin, standing with sin, or sitting with sin.

So the question for us is, what are we walking with that would keep us from God & this blessed life in him? What are we standing with? What are we sitting with?

Sitting is a lot farther along than walking. And standing is farther along than walking. All sin is progressive. We never stay in one place. As my uncle used to say, "Sin takes you farther than you want to go, keeps you longer than you want to stay, & costs you more than you want to pay." Always.

So, whatever we are walking with that would keep us from God & his blessed life, walk away! Whatever we are standing with, walk away! And if we are sitting with something we know we shouldn't be, pray that God will pry us out of it or it out of us! Wherever we are, God has revealed the life that he blesses. The question is, according to Psalm 1, are we blessed?
