"1000 days"
A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked. (Psalm 84:10 NLT)
If you could live one day, anywhere in the world, where would it be? It seems a tough question to answer. There are myriads of options in the world. Would we go tropical & enjoy a relaxing day at the beach? Would we go wintry & opt for skiing in Utah? Would we spend all of our money in New York City or Vegas? Where would we go, what would we do if we had just one day?
The Psalmist gives us his answer. He is so satisfied & enamored with the presence of God that he would rather spend one day with God than a thousand anywhere else. If he had one day he would want to spend it with God.
Is this our heart's desire? Do we value & treasure the presence of God this way? Did God even make it into our thoughts when we think about our one day? It probably doesn't sound very appealing to us because the presence of God is often more work than it is freeing. Rather than running to God as our refuge away from work & the world, we make him just another part of it. Just another check on the to do list. We make him an item to accomplish rather than a person to be enjoyed. Can you identify with this?
But the Psalmist is not this way. He'd rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God than dwell in the comforts of the wicked's tent. Why? Because he just wants to be where God is.
We need to get back to where the presence of God is what we long for not just an addition to our lives. Where we rest in him, hope in him, delight in him, & confide in him. Where we would rather be with him than anywhere else.
