"You are what you worship"
They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors, and they despised all his warnings. They worshiped worthless idols, so they became worthless themselves. They followed the example of the nations around them, disobeying the Lord 's command not to imitate them. (2 Kings 17:15 NLT)
You are what you eat. At least that's what my mom always told me. "If you eat one more french fry you will turn into a french fry" has been the cry of many a mother in the United States. What we take in does affect our health drastically. If we eat foods high in fat & calories we will gain weight. If we eat foods with lower caloric value & fat then we lose weight. When it comes to food, we reap what we sow!
The same is true spiritually. God says of his people here in 2 Kings, "They worshiped worthless idols, so they became worthless themselves." In this way, we are what we worship. That's not to say that if we worship God we are God. We are not God. But, if God is the object of our souls affection then the more we worship God the more like him we become.
Think about it.
Worship is not merely what happens when the body of Christ gathers (corporate). Worship is also what we give our time to, what we give our money to, what we give out leisure time to, & what we give our joy to (personal). These things help reveal what we worship. And we will be made into the image of what we worship.
If we worship money, we will be made in wealth's image. Everything that comes with wealth will be ours, the good & the bad. If we worship leisure time, then we become shaped by that activity. But whatever we worship besides God, it will lead us down a path of worthlessness. If God is not the center of our world & worship then we are being shaped into the image of something else. And that is idolatry & that leads to us becoming worthless. Not that these things are bad in themselves. They make good gifts but bad gods.
Are we being shaped more into the image of Christ because we passionately worship & pursue him with our lives? Or, are we giving ourselves to lesser things, being shaped by worthlessness & becoming worthless?
