32"God is not a mortal like me, so I cannot argue with him or take him to trial. 33If only there were a mediator who could bring us together, but there is none. 34The mediator could make God stop beating me, and I would no longer live in terror of his punishment. 35Then I could speak to him without fear, but I cannot do that in my own strength. (Job 9:32-35)
Job is ancient. He is placed here chronologically because it is believed that he lived during the time of the patriarchs. So very early on we see that he reveals something about the human condition. He reveals a need that we all have. He foreshadows what it is that we would need. We need someone to intercede between God & man.
I can't remember who it was but I remember reading about a man who wanted to communicate with his fish. He thought of this one day while staring at his fish tank. He walked over to the tank, look at the fish & tried his hardest to think of a way to communicate with them. How could he speak to them? How could he tell them what he wanted them to know? He soon realized he couldn't. The only way that he would be able to communicate with his fish would be to become a fish.
We can't get to God. We can't understand God. Job is expressing what all of us feel in our own lives at some point. God does not make sense to us. He does something that defies logic, something that we think should never happen and we long to see into his heart! We long to know just exactly what it is he was thinking. We long to have someone who could go to God on our behalf and talk to him and send word back to us.
This is who Jesus is. He is the intercessor between God and man. He is who Job is longing for. He is who we are longing for. Because we cannot get to God, God had to come to us. If he was going to communicate his love for us and our need for him, he would have to become like us. And he did. "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14)." He is the image of the invisible God. No one has ever seen God but the Word has made him known to us.
We can know God because we can know Christ. Does this mean that every circumstance will magically now make sense? Not hardly. But it does mean that we have a Savior who has walked a mile in our shoes, who has lived in our skin, & who knows what we are feeling & going through. He invites us to "Cast our cares upon him for his cares for us" & to "Come unto me all you who are weary and heaven laden and I will give you rest."
We will not know the ins and outs of every little detail of the circumstances of our lives. But we can know the one who does. And on this side of eternity, that's as good as it gets and that's the best we could hope for! We don't need answers when we have Him! He is enough. Is he enough for you?
