For they all know
that my disaster has come from the hand of the Lord .
For the life of every living thing is in his hand,
and the breath of every human being. (Job 12:9, 10 NLT)
God is sovereign. The earth is the Lord's & everything in it. At the end of the day, he answers to no one.
At first, this can seem overwhelming. Maybe even unfair. Especially when it comes to Job's life. It seems that God & Satan are just shooting the breeze about Job's life. "Hey Satan, please inflict Job!" It's like we have a window into this divine wager & it's very intimidating. The real lives of people are at stake here & it seems that God is taking all of this lightly. Again, scary.
But consider this truth again. Do we really want a God who is not in control? Do we need a God who we can control? Wouldn't that make us God? If God is not sovereign over all things then he cannot be God. If someone or something has dominion over him, then that someone or something is God.
We have no problem with God's sovereignty when life is rainbows & butterflies. It's when life takes a turn that we did not see coming that God's control becomes our concern. It is in these times however, that the only thing that gives us hope, peace, & comfort is the fact that God is in control. When our lives are out of control, the only truth that keeps us sane is that he is in control. God may not be safe but he is good. Trusting his goodness & his sovereignty doesn't always give us the answers to life's most difficult questions (actually, it may create even more questions sometimes). Trusting His goodness & his sovereignty doesn't always give us solutions to life's most difficult circumstances but it does give us all we need. Him.
