"Saved from God"
And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. (Romans 5:9 NLT)
When we talk about the gospel, we often speak only about one or two aspects of it. We talk about being saved & what we mean is that we have been saved by God. Christ has come & he has died for our sins to bring us to God. We trust in his death for us & we are saved.
But this is only part of the truth of salvation & the gospel. We are also saved to God. We are brought to him in relationship for good works. But it goes even deeper still. We are also saved from God. And this is what this passage is talking about here.
Jesus not only had to save us to God but from God. "He will certainly save us from God’s condemnation." God's holiness & his law demands death for sin. From Adam's sin to ours, the wages of sin is death. And the wrath of God does burn against sin & every sin of every human being will be punished. It will either be punished in hell for all of eternity or it will be punished on Jesus at the cross.
In this way, Jesus saves us from God. From a righteously angry God whose wrath we deserve. We can never know what it means to be saved TO God until we understand that we have been saved FROM God. To put it another way, we can't know the goodness of the good news until we know the badness of the bad news.
The reality is not that we are good men in trouble with a bad God. But, that we are bad men that deserve the wrath of a good God. And Jesus came to save us from this wrath, from God, by satisfying his wrath on the cross.
Now God is forever satisfied in the death of his Son for those that trust him. He is not angry with those that are hidden in Christ. We are accepted. We are not condemned. We are saved.
