"Christ in spite of Christians"
True, some of them were unfaithful; but just because they were unfaithful, does that mean God will be unfaithful? Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. As the Scriptures say about him, “You will be proved right in what you say, and you will win your case in court.” (Romans 3:3, 4 NLT)
Many people criticize Christianity because of Christians. And I really don't blame them. Christians are often times not the people we should be. But isn't that why we are Christians? Because we see our desperate need for someone to rescue us from ourselves?
Indeed, we are in great need of being saved. But there are some so called Christians out there that are very religious but don't know Jesus. These are the people that callous the lost's conscience in regard to Christ. And many people that claim to avoid Christianity really have a problem with Christ & not Christians in their heart.
Romans 3 shows us this. "But just because they were unfaithful, does that mean God will be unfaithful?" Just because God's people are unfaithful & still sinners, does not mean that God will be unfaithful. In other words, even though we have a great responsibility in how we represent Jesus (see Romans 2:24) we are, in fact, not Jesus. And although we will be unfaithful, he never is. Never has been, never will be.
God is always faithful. And if we hear someone say they can't be a Christian because of Christians, show them Romans 3. Show them a God that is faithful beyond the faithfulness of his imperfect followers. Show them everyone's need for grace. Show them that Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven. Show them Christ in spite of Christians.
