"Better than Jesus"
But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Advocate won't come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. (John 16:7 NLT)
What could be better than Jesus? The answer is surely nothing right? Not so fast my friend.
Jesus tells his disciples that it's to their benefit that he goes away. He tells them that he must go away so that the Holy Spirit can come.
And Jesus calls this better! If we had to choose though, do we agree with Jesus? Would we rather have the person of Jesus in bodily form or the Holy Spirit living inside of us?
Sadly, many of us don't realize who we have living in us in the person of the Holy Spirit. But why is this better?
It's hard to say but here are a couple of ideas. Jesus could be in one place at one time because he is fully man as well as fully God. He was geographically limited. But when the Spirit came, he indwelt all believers so that the hands & feet of Jesus are everywhere that his followers are. We are the presence of Jesus in the world through the indwelling of the Spirit.
Another thought is that Jesus could speak to his disciples & lead them in person but could not stay with them forever. The Spirit however, is with us all the time, all over the world at once. What an amazing God we serve.
The reasons are many. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is multifaceted & wonderful! And if Jesus says it's better that we have him, we know it's better.
How do we ignore the Spirit in our lives? How do we need to acknowledge & love him like we do Jesus?
