Day 275/365- John 5:39-40

"Bible worship"

"You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life. (John 5:39, 40 NLT)

Sometimes as Christians we can worship the Bible. It is, in fact, the very Word of God. And yet in the midst of reading the Word of God it is possible to miss the God of the Word.

This is what Jesus criticizes the religious leaders for. They knew the Scriptures so well & yet missed him altogether. They didn't know God even though he was standing right in front of them!!

The Scriptures don't point to a method of salvation, they point to a person. They don't point to a procedure but to a relationship. And the religious leaders missed this. They had rules & religion but lacked a real relationship.

And so the danger is the same for us. We can read black ink on white paper but never engage a person. We can know verses of Scripture but not be well-versed in Jesus. The Bible must drive us to the author, not the book itself. We must worship a person & not a book.
