Day 240/365- Lamentations 3:23

"Do-over"

Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. (Lamentations 3:23 NLT)

I remember as a kid always calling a "do-over" whenever I didn't do something right the first time. From hitting a ball to answering a question, if I failed to nail it the first time, I wanted a do-over. Much to the chagrin of my friends mind you.

But there is something about us as humans that we want to get it right. We fail with great regularity & failure is not where we want to stay. We want to succeed. And if we are going to, we must have the grace of a do-over.

I don't want to make light of God's grace here or prescribe some sort of easy believism. By saying, "God gives us a do-over every morning," it sounds as if we can live how we want one day knowing God is going to wipe the slate clean the next. That's not what I mean at all. But if I'm reading this verse correctly, God's mercy is fresh everyday. And we most certainly need it everyday. Not that God's grace from yesterday is not enough. It is! Surely it is! But the fact that God is so good, so compassionate, so understanding, & so loving toward us as to offer us a fresh start everyday, is almost too much for my heart to contain. Could it really be true?

No matter what I have done today, God promises to cover repented of sin in his mercy tomorrow. How can this not draw us to him in love & praise? How can this not overflow into unbridled surrender? How can this not result in a passion to obey & love this God back?

I submit to you that it does exactly that. God gives us fresh, new, overflowing, undeserved mercy EVERYDAY. Without it, I'm sure tomorrow would not be worth living.

And just imagine how many of our neighbors, co-workers, friends, & family will wake up tomorrow without this hope. We should not only let it fill & cover our hearts but we must take it to others as well.

Do-overs are only found in Jesus. He doesn't make us better, he makes us new.
