"Use your charm"
Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. (Proverbs 31:30 NLT)
What is the most important quality in a spouse? Should we look for someone with the most earning potential? Someone who is successful? Someone who is ambitious? Someone with a great personality? Looks? Charisma?
There is an endless list of qualities that we look for in a spouse. But I'm amazed how a person's relationship with Christ is OFTEN put on the back burner in Christian relationships. We want looks, personality, & ambition but Jesus seems to just be a "perk" or a bonus. We like for Jesus to be an add-on but he is not essential. How can this be? Jesus must be the central issue in our relationships. If another person doesn't know Jesus or love Jesus, how can looks or personality outweigh that?
Proverbs 31 speaks about this godly woman. She has many great attributes. But at the heart of these attributes is why she is the way she is. She is the great woman she is because she fears the Lord. That's it. Who she is flows directly from that. Furthermore, this verse says that charm & beauty are essentially worthless in the long run compared to fearing the Lord. This is the complete opposite of our culture.
Our culture says, "Loving Jesus is deceptive & godliness will not last but a woman who is hot is to be praised!" Our world prizes the good looking above many things. And this mindset has infiltrated the church. Our top attributes are looks & personality while Jesus sits on the back burner. So, we get married & we struggle. Why? Because we marry people that don't love Jesus but at least they look good!
This is insanity! I'm not saying its wrong to want to marry someone good looking. Surely it's not. But if they don't love Jesus it doesn't matter what their dress size is or how flag their abs are! Our world is increasingly visual & has endless praise for the attractive. But our Bibles are teaching us that character is what really matters. The question is, do we have ears to hear it?
