"No one says no to themselves"
A person without self-control
is like a city with broken-down walls. (Proverbs 25:28 NLT)
Self-control is a lost attribute. With social media in our world, people can share their travel, pictures, actions, thoughts, & words at anytime. This is a great tool but can be a detriment. Many people rant uncontrollably about this & that. For most people, the internet is just an outward expression of who they are inwardly. We also live in a world of indulgence. No one says no to themselves. "Anyway you want it that's the way you need, anyway you want it", said the great theologians Journey.
This verse sheds light on how we should live in this regard. We need to exercise self-control. With our tongues, our thoughts, our actions, & our lives. The Bible here says that if we don't exercise self-control we are like a city without walls.
A city without walls is without protection. If we don't have self- control we are susceptible to attack. At any moment we could be attacked for anything we say or do. Self-control offers protection for us. Knowing when to say things & when to refrain can save us a lot of heartache. Knowing when to act & when to wait protects us as well. Without self-control, ours loves are open to much danger!
A city without walls is also without inward protection. People can come & go as they please. There is no protection from without or within! So it is with people without self-control. There is not only danger from without but also from within. We cannot guard our hearts without self-control. We cannot keep the things inside that we need to keep. There are no boundaries or barriers.
So self-control is not just a fruit of the Spirit that is optional but is essential to living protected lives. If we are going to live lives that are not harmful to others, ourselves, & the reputation of God we must have self-control. What areas of our lives need a dose of self-control? Let's ask the Holy Spirit to produce this much needed fruit in our lives!
