"Don't party, go to funerals"
Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties.
After all, everyone dies—
so the living should take this to heart. (Ecclesiastes 7:2 NLT)
"Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties." What? Who thinks this way? What in the world does this mean?
Solomon is not being morbid here but is offering a shocking, sobering reminder. One out of every one person dies. That's everyone. Everyone. His advice is to take this to heart. I think Tim McGraw may have taken a page out of Solomon's book with his song, "Live Like You Were Dying." We should live with the end in sight. Not only that, we should live for eternity. Everything here is so temporary. Nothing lasts forever. What is going to last are eternal things.
So what are we living for? What would be the eternal result of our lives be if they ended today? Are the way we are living be the way we would want if we died tomorrow? What would be lasting from our lives?
These questions help us prioritize & keep focus on the things that matter. They keep us pointed at the things of God & eternal things. It helps us to forget the silly things we allow to preoccupy us so often. So, next time you go to a party, remember, it's better to attend a funeral!
