"Chasing the Wind"
But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere. (Ecclesiastes 2:11 NLT)
Solomon has reached rock bottom. He has more wealth, possessions, wisdom, & experience than most countries & yet he is in deep despair. It appears his life is a dream, to be envied by everyone. But he sees it differently. He talks about how meaningless wealth is. He talks about how meaningless pleasure is. He talks about how all of life is one big disappointment after the other. This is shocking coming from a guy who has it all!
What this reveals is that nothing has meaning apart from God. Nothing fulfills in the place of God. God's gifts make good gifts but terrible gods. Money, pleasure, fame, wisdom, & anything else under the sun was not created or designed to be the "be all, end all" of our lives. We were not created for wealth but for God. We were not created for pleasure but for God. We were not created primarily for happiness but for God.
We were created by him & for him & until we pursue our joy & life in him we will find ourselves, like Solomon, enduring one disappointment after another, chasing the wind forever in this life!
