"Awakening Love"
Promise me, O women of Jerusalem,
by the gazelles and wild deer,
not to awaken love until the time is right. (Song of Solomon 2:7 NLT)
Song of Solomon is a love poem. It's the original love song. It's full of great lyrics & descriptions of deep love between two individuals. This is a great tribute to the marriage relationship God has ordained. It shows that God created the human relationship called marriage & ordained it for our good & his glory. Chapter 2:7 is the first of three times that this verse is mentioned. The admonition here is "Don't awaken love until the time is right." There is a right time for sexual intimacy. There is a proper context. It should not be awakened until that time. Sex is to be enjoyed, it is a gift from God but that gift is only to be enjoyed in the context of marriage. Any type of sex outside of marriage is a violation of God's best, God's heart, & God's law. From pornography & sex before marriage to homosexuality & adultery, any use of this gift of God not "at the proper time" is sin. Man tends to abuse every good gift of God & sex is at the forefront of that abuse in our culture.
We as the church must return to the truth found in this passage. Sex does have a context & that context is marriage between a man & a woman for a lifetime. Anything outside of this is sin & must be repented of. And this starts with God's people!
