"Wasted Work"
Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted.
Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. (Psalm 127:1 NLT)
Without God, everything is essentially worthless. That's what Solomon is trying to convey here. We can work all day in our own power but unless God does it, it will not happen!
If we labor for happiness apart from God, we will not be happy. If we work for significance apart from God, we will not find our true purpose & meaning. If we work for wealth apart from God, all we have will not fulfill. Without God, life is not what he intended & created it to be. Without God, nothing will be what it should be.
On the contrary, if our lives are centered on him & he is the architect of our lives, we can be sure we will live the purpose he has for us. If he is building our lives, our marriages, resources, jobs, & every other area of our lives then we can be sure our lives will be used for his glory. We can be sure that we will live the most fulfilling lives. We can be sure that he will accomplish his desires for us.
