"God Revealed"
The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.
The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. (Psalm 19:1, 7 NLT)
I love Psalm 19. There is so much here that is rich. The main two things that stand out are the ways in which God has revealed himself. God has revealed himself to everyone in general revelation. "The heavens declare the glory of God." God as creator has painted a sky that reflects who he is & what he is like. The whole of the creative order is speaking about God. It is giving him glory continually. Our conscience cannot escape this.
But God hasn't stopped there. He doesn't just give us general revelation of himself. He has given us special revelation of himself. He has revealed himself in his written word. General revelation is enough to let us know there is a God & we are accountable to him but we need special revelation in order to know him personally.
We know celebrities from movies. We know them from the characters they play. We know them from the roles they portray. But we don't know them personally no matter what US weekly says about them! We know athletes & other famous people from various outlets but we don't know them personally. This would actually take time to get to know them in person, something most of us don't have access to. We don't know their favorite color, most embarrassing moment, first job, dreams, or family members. We would need a relationship with them personally to do that.
God knew that special revelation would be needed in addition to general revelation. If we were going to really know him, a sunset wouldn't be enough. It reveals his glory but not his love. Only Jesus could do that. Jesus is the ultimate special revelation. As Hebrews 1 says, "And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe" (Hebrews 1:2 NLT).
God has gone out of his way to reveal himself to us, the question is, do we know him?
