"Family Ties"
Now David's son Absalom had a beautiful sister named Tamar. And Amnon, her half brother, fell desperately in love with her. (2 Samuel 13:1 NLT)
David is beginning to see more consequences of his sin. Nathan promised that the sword would never depart from his family. Heartache for him will be a regular occurrence. We see this in the matter of Judah & Tamar. The immorality of the father is manifesting itself in the son.
Often times we think of our sin & the consequences of it as just affecting us. God forgives & restores but sadly consequences are beyond our control. They are often deeper, longer, & more hurtful than we could imagine. David's sin didn't just affect him. It affected many others, most notedly his own family.
We can choose our sin but we can't choose the consequences. This should cause us to tremble & consider our lives before we act. How will this decision affect me? How will it affect others? How will it affect my family? Will this leave a good legacy or a tarnished one?
It's often these questions that are most important & yet seemed to be ignored from some passing pleasure.
David life screams out to us to take care how we live, for God's reputation in our lives, for us, & for future generations.
