"The Silent Killer"
In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 11:1 NLT)
David was somewhere he never should have been. He was supposed to be out to war with his army. He was supposed to be fulfilling his role as king. He was supposed to be doing the work that the Lord put him in place to do. Instead, he was at Jerusalem.
While on the roof one day, he noticed a beautiful woman bathing. He called her to him & was intimate with her. He did this even though he found out she was the wife of Uriah, one of his thirty mighty men. She became pregnant from their encounter & David was in a mess. How does a woman become pregnant when her husband is off to war?
David calls in Uriah from the battlefield. He encourages him to go to his house & enjoy being home. This includes being with his wife. You can see David's logic here. If he goes home & stays with his wife, all is good & no one has to know. But Uriah has more character than the king. He refused to sleep at home while his fellow soldiers were not able to enjoy the same luxuries.
Now David has a dilemma. Send Uriah back & the scandal will soon become public. Or, have him killed & take his wife for himself. He does the later & his secret seems safe. Until God sends Nathan the prophet to David. Now what was done in secret has become public. What he tried to cover up has been brought to the light anyway.
Not only this, but David's baby dies & the sword never departs from his house. What ensues in the coming chapters of 2 Samuel is utter chaos.
All of this, adultery, murder, coveting, idolatry, stealing, & lying, because David was somewhere he never should have been. If he had been where he was supposed to be none of this would have ever happened.
Sexual sin is not only rampant in our culture it's rampant in our churches. It's not only practiced in our culture it's blatantly approved by our culture. And the church is not much different. Adultery & pornography are the silent killers in the church. Things are done in secret & great risk is taken to cover them up. Statistics say that many men that sit in the pew have viewed or are regularly viewing pornography. All because we find ourselves in places we never should be.
The key to avoiding sexual sin & breaking the pattern of this in our lives is getting out of the places we never should have been in the first place. Get out of unfiltered Internet. Get out of unblocked TV. Get out of movie channels with filth on them. Get out of the places where lust is festered & adultery is ever present. How many of these things could be cut out of our lives if we would simply were where we should be & avoided the places we shouldn't be? We have seen what it cost king David, what could it cost us?
