"Evidence that Demands a Verdict"
But you have seen the Lord perform all these mighty deeds with your own eyes! (Deuteronomy 11:7 NLT)
The past does not always determine the future. This can be positive or negative. Say the past has been filled with a lot of good, that good is not necessarily promised to continue in the future. Conversely, if the past has been filled with some bad, it doesn't mean the future has to be this way either. The past is not a guarantee of the future, but it can definitely be an indication. We live in patterns. We do things over and over, day after day. These patterns determine our actions and our lives. If we want to change our past, we have to change our patterns. To change our patterns, we have to have a change in heart.
The Lord here is reminding the people of all that he has done for them in the past. They have seen all that he has done since they left Egypt. They have heard about all of the many things he has done to prove and display his faithfulness. God is revealing to them that he will be faithful in the future as he has always been in the past. He is also showing them, that they have the opportunity to be faithful in the future, despite being unfaithful in the past.
The past secures God's future faithfulness and it also makes opportunity for ours. It doesn't matter what we have done or where we have been, today is a new day. God's mercies are new every day. God has proven to be more than enough for us. What would hinder us from putting the past aside & moving on toward being the people that God has called us to be? He has been & is faithful, will we be?
