"In Everything We Do"
And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9 NLT)
Deuteronomy 6 is one of the most quoted & known passages in the Hebrew Scripture. For most of God's people this passage was quoted daily. In it we see God's expectations for his people.
They are to know who God is & teach his ways to their kids. They are to know God & make him known.
In order to be able to teach someone something, we must first possess the knowledge ourselves. We can't teach what we don't know. Also, we can only reproduce who we really are. Knowing God is the top priority in being God's people. Secondly, making him known to the next generation is just as crucial.
We are always one generation away from extinction. They were not just to teach their kids faith on the weekends or at bedtime. They were charged to not just pray with their kids at mealtime. Every part of life & their day was to be filled with discipleship of the next generation. For our kids to know God & have a passion for making him known it takes very intentional, constant, & consistent instruction. It can't be passive. Our kids will be molded. They can be molded by us or something/someone else.
Our life with God is a day in & day out relationship. We don't have God time & other time. It's all God's time. Our lives are to be centered on his person, passion, principles, presence, & precepts for our lives. We are to do this when we lie down, rise up, walk, sit, & in everything we do!
