"Portion Control"
"Command the people of Israel to give to the Levites from their property certain towns to live in, along with the surrounding pasturelands. (Numbers 35:2 NLT)
God instructed the people to give the Levites cities for their use. They were to do this because the Levites did not receive a portion of land. All of the descendants of Levi had no allotment of land because God said that he would be there portion, he would be there blessing, he would be there reward. They did not need land because they had him.
Often times we love & serve God for what we get out of him. We love God for what he gives us. Often our affections rise & fall based on how blessed we feel from God. We frame salvation & the gospel in these terms as well. We say, "Come to Jesus so you don't have to go to hell when you die." We reduce the gospel down to a get out of hell free card.
The gospel is much more than this. At the heart of the gospel is God himself. Jesus is our prize, our portion. The goal is not to avoid having our skin burned but having him! Just like the Levites had God as their portion, we too as priests have been given God as our portion. He is our delight. He is our reward. He is the blessing!!
