"The Wrong Side of the Tracks"
But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the Lord , and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. (Numbers 32:23 NLT)
At first it seems that the tribes of Gad & Reuben want something for nothing. They ask Moses if they can have the land on this side of the Jordan (new meaning to "wrong side of the tracks?"). Moses takes this to mean that they don't want to go across the river & fight with their brothers. He is furious & with good reason. Two men from these tribes once sided with the other 8 spies who said they should not go into the land the Lord promised them. Is this the same kind of ploy?
In fact, all they really want is the land on this side of the Jordan that would be good for their livestock. All of the tribes are going to get a inheritance all they want is their inheritance in this good part of the land. What stands out here is what Moses tells them if they aren't willing to go fight with their brothers on the other side of the Jordan. He tells them, "Be sure, your sins will find you out!"
I've heard this saying a lot growing up. It put a big fear in me to behave! I think this truth goes deeper than just right behavior. The reality is, sin never goes unpunished. Sin is always brought to the light. Now, this bringing to the light is not always immediate but it is eventual. Everything will be brought to the light & every sin will be accounted for. The question is, will our sin be on us or on someone else? Will our sin be found out in the judgement of our souls or have they already been exposed & dealt with on the cross of Christ. We can be sure in this life or the next that our sin will find us out. How will it find us?
