'Ignorant Is Bliss'
"If any of the common people sin by violating one of the Lord 's commands, but they don't realize it, they are still guilty. (Leviticus 4:27 NLT)
Ignorance is bliss right? It may seem so in many occasions but not when it comes to sin. Ignorance is not an excuse before God. Ignorance does not atone for sin. God told his people that they were guilty for sin even if they were not immediately aware that they had committed one.
This is sometimes not intentional. We wrong someone, say or do something that is not intentional but it is still wrong. When we are made aware we are sorry. We make amends. Other times we act in ignorance. We suppress the truth in unrighteousness like Romans 1 says & we use ignorance as an excuse to indulge in sin.
Either way, ignorance does not atone for sin. Only a bloods sacrifice can.
I think this passage reveals, at least in some part, the depth of wickedness in the human heart. Sometimes we can so veil the truth in our lives that we act in ignorance while having access to the truth. It would seem that some of us choose ignorance. We would rather not know than walk in the truth. We convince ourselves that there is not a God & we are not responsible to him. We convince ourselves that we feel ok about something that God's word clearly prohibits. We have come to peace with disobeying God not because God or his Word has changed but because we have. We have seared our conscience, living in our own world of truth rather than the truth of God.
This type of mindset & living is what must be repented of. In this case, ignorance has no bliss at all.
