Day 353/365- Hebrews 5:12

"You ought to be teaching others"

You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. (Hebrews 5:12 NLT)

I believe this verse sums up a lot of churches in the United States today. Many people are still trying to learn the basic things about God's Word when they should be teaching others. Many Christians have been Christians for years & years in American churches & still have never led anyone to Jesus much less discipled them in Jesus.

The real question here is why?

We are distracted & preoccupied with many things & have lost sight of what's most central to our lives as Christ's followers. Jesus revealed to his church what they were to be about: making disciples. And we have let careers, money, comfort, & many other lesser gods take the priority that disciple making should take. Not only do these idols take away from disciple making but also being disciples. If we focused as much of our energy on being followers of Jesus that we did all the other interests in our lives we wouldn't have to have all the basics over & over again.

Many times we have to beg regular church attenders to read their Bibles. Many people have to be convinced that evangelism is important. Many people don't know what the Word of God says about their lives & how they should live them. Not so much because the Bible is confusing but because we simply refuse to do the easy things like read it.

We will never be the church that Jesus died on the cross to redeem until we first become disciples that make disciples.

What can we do this upcoming year to take the next step in our discipleship?
