"Two masters"
"No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24 NLT)
I'm amazed at people's ability to multitask these days. Even I enjoy multitasking. When I exercise I listen to audio books so that I can do two things at once. Women have the ability to multitask better than men. It amazes me that a woman can be on the phone, making dinner, disciplining a child, & watching TV all at the same time. Simply amazing.
But this is not possible spiritually. We can't multitask. The human heart cannot serve two masters. Jesus is clear about this here. But we all think we can. We all think we can be the first people to be spiritual multitaskers. And what this comes down to for all of us is we are either worshipping Jesus or us, serving him or ourselves. Here he talks about the fact that we can't serve him & money but money is not the only idol we worship.
We can't serve lust & Jesus.
We can't serve another person & Jesus.
We can't serve the approval of others & Jesus.
We can't serve entertainment & Jesus. We can't serve comfort & Jesus.
We can't serve the American dream & Jesus.
One or the other is central & we can't have it both ways. Either Jesus is all or he isn't. Either he is Lord or he isn't. Either we serve him or we don't. There is no middle ground. We can't serve two masters.
How do we know who we serve? The passage following this verse gives us some insight. Jesus says that we shouldn't worry about what we should wear or eat. Money can buy clothes & food. So if we serve money, it promises security, stability, & stuff. But Jesus tells us not to seek wealth but his kingdom. Here's why: money is a false security. It's here one moment & gone the next. But Jesus, he never runs out. And although it feels less secure in the beginning & seems risky, he's more secure than money could ever be. Money will be spent & riches will fade but the life we have in Jesus is everlasting.
What are you trusting in more than Jesus? How have we tried to serve two masters?
