"House of bread"
"In Bethlehem in Judea," they said, "for this is what the prophet wrote:
`And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.'" (Matthew 2:5, 6 NLT)
Bethlehem, the city where Jesus was born, was the prophesied birthplace of the Messiah. Herod puts the pieces together that Jesus is the promised Messiah. He puts it together but many others deny it. The Jewish people, that have the prophets, still deny Jesus was the Messiah & look for another to come. They will be waiting a long time.
Bethlehem means "house of bread" in Hebrew. It's interesting to note that Jesus would be born there & that one of the ways he would describe himself would be as the bread of life. The bread of life was born in the house of bread. This is no accident.
Jesus is the fulfillment of all that the Old Testament promised. He is the coming one. He has come. He has accomplished salvation. He is the bread of life & there is no other. Only when our lives are centered on him does life really make sense.
