"The darkness can NEVER extinguish it"
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. (John 1:5)
I'm certain the first 18 verses of the gospel of John contain more gospel truth than a lifetime of exploration can unearth. It leaves my soul longing to search out more of Jesus, to know him more than I ever have. It feels like a passage I should read everyday for the rest of my life & not just once a year in a "through the Bible" reading.
Every verse stands out but one caught my attention more today than it has before. Verse 5 says the "light shines in the darkness & the darkness can never extinguish it." Never. That's powerful, strong, & decisive language.
This passage comes off 400 years of silence between the Old & New Testaments. Maybe some doubts have crept into the minds of Roman occupied Jews about the attentiveness of God. I'm sure there was some doubt on if he even cared.
Jesus, the light of the world, has come into the world, & this light can never be extinguished. God wins. His enemies will forever be defeated by the light. Darkness will be scattered & the light will rule supreme. Forever. Forever. Never to be put out.
There is hope in our darkness of sin, Jesus is the light. He will never be extinguished.
