"Not intended for use"
And he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, "In Jerusalem will I put my name." (2 Kings 21:4 ESV)
My dad likes to use things for purposes they weren't intended for. For instance, he used our Mercury Marquis wagon for pushing round hay into the pasture. I guess if you have horses & no tractor, this is what you do.
I can't imagine the manufacturer actually sitting in a planning meeting saying, "We should make an attachment for a bucket on this car. You know, just in case someone has to move some stuff around, like hay. This car can not only be a grocery getter for soccer moms but also a utility vehicle."
Ok, we know that never happened but don't tell my dad that.
Similarly & infinitely more tragic is the use of the house of God by king Mannaseh. He built alters to pagan gods where God's name was to be honored. The temple was not created for this purpose. It was created for the worship of God. The temple full of idols is like a Mercury being used to move hay, it just doesn't belong.
Where have we used the things of God for improper uses? How have we misused his blessings? His grace? His heart? His gospel?
Where do we need to repent & turn back to his original design for our lives?
