Day 205/365- Isaiah 40:18-20

"The Incomparable God"

To whom can you compare God?
What image can you find to resemble him?
Can he be compared to an idol formed in a mold,
overlaid with gold, and decorated with silver chains?
Or if people are too poor for that,
they might at least choose wood that won't decay
and a skilled craftsman
to carve an image that won't fall down! (Isaiah 40:18-20 NLT)

Francis Chan says that God is like the ocean. He is vast & goes on forever. He cannot be measured. And our ability to know him with our finite minds is like a soda can. Imagine trying to fit the ocean in a sofa can. Twelve ounces of ocean is all we can handle. So too, we cannot fully wrap our minds around God. And it's not even close.

This is a great illustration of our ability to understand God or better yet, our lack of ability to understand God. God is fundamentally unknowable. How can a soda can capture the essence of the ocean? So too, how can a human mind really contain the fullness of God? We cannot. God is completely beyond us. And he is completely sufficient in & of himself. But he stoops to know us, ultimately in his son!

This passage in Isaiah is comparing the living God with idols. These are gods formed by human hands & human ingenuity. God is pointing out the foolishness of serving gods that one had made with his hands. What can a self-made god do? He can't even stand upright!

There is no one like our God. He is not one of many similar options. He is not one path to get to the same destination as other religions. He is not the god of Islam. He is God almighty & there is none like him! None can be compared with him!
