"He Rescues"
He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners. The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down. The Lord loves the godly. The Lord protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked. (Psalm 146:7-9 NLT)
God has always been about rescuing people. He rescued Adam & Eve in the garden. He rescued his people from Egypt. He is described in this Psalm as rescuing the oppressed, the hungry, the prisoner, the blind, the weighed down, the foreigner, the widow, & the orphan.
He rescues.
This has always been God's plan. From the garden to the cross, God rescues. Consider the amazing continuity from this passage in Psalms to what Jesus quotes in Luke 4. "The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free" (Luke 4:18 NLT).
Here in Luke we have the same group as in Psalm 146. We have the poor, the captive, the blind, & the oppressed. God rescues them all.
And the cross of Jesus is the culmination of this rescue. God will no longer rescue by plagues & parting seas but rather through his Son.
This has always been God's plan.
The whole of the Bible moves in this direction. This is clearly seen even in Psalm 146.
He rescues.
