Day 195/365- Psalm 121:8

"Guardian God"

The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. (Psalm 121:8 NLT)

This Psalm is about how God watches over his people. God takes special care when it comes to his own. He watches in the day time & at night. God never sleeps. He is always there with us, taking special care of everything in our lives.

I love this image of God watching over us. It is the image of a loving father. God is described here almost as our guardian. Who needs a guardian angel when we have God?

I've heard a lot of people talk about guardian angels & I've always been puzzled by this. The Bible never talks about an angel guarding over us. Angels are not chubby, ruddy faced kids shooting arrows at people & sitting on clouds. The Greek word angel means "messenger." And this is what they were & are in the Bible, messengers. They may have even been warriors in appearance with swords & armor. This is why many people are afraid of them when they first see them. Besides, who wants a guardian angel when we can have a God that guards us like our God does?!

We shouldn't substitute the love & care of God for the imaginary guard of a messenger of God. Angels are not for us, they are for God.

So, next time we find ourselves in need of help, protection, guarding, & refuge, don't settle for an angel, let's run to our God! He's better & he is enough!
