"Follow the Leader"
Afterward, Joash took it to heart to renovate the Lord's temple. (2 Chronicles 24:4 HCSB)
Idolatry has been rampant among God's people. What's sad about this is most of this comes from the kings. And this is a pattern in life & in leadership: as the leadership goes, so goes the people. And so king after king after king leads the people to rebel against God.
And then a seven year old takes the throne. In Moses-like circumstances he is hidden so that he escapes death. He then emerges to lead God's people. And he leads God's people back to worship of him & him alone. A seven year old!
He leads the people to rebuild the temple & inspires them to give toward that end. And so restoring the worship of God is his passion & purpose as king.
Joash's unwavering leadership at a young age & passion for corporate worship challenges us. What are we leading people to do? Worship God or someone/something else? Our lives are either driving people toward him or away from him. The way we do our jobs, raise our kids, treat our spouse, order our schedule, manage our resources, & spend our leisure time should point people to God. It should reflect our commitment to him, that we treasure him above all else.
Also, we need to share his passion for corporate worship. The church gathering to lift up the name of Jesus together in biblical community. Do we have a passion for the worship of God? We should long to see people leave their worship of other gods to return to the worship of Jesus.
Joash's life inspires us to do what God has commanded us to do no matter the stage of life we are in. Whether young or old, God wants to use us to bring people to worship him! And, we can't be outdone by a 7 year old!
