"My Hope is in You"
"Lord , remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
Remind me that my days are numbered—
how fleeting my life is.
You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.
My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;
at best, each of us is but a breath."
We are merely moving shadows,
and all our busy rushing ends in nothing.
We heap up wealth,
not knowing who will spend it.
And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?
My only hope is in you. (Psalm 39:4-7 NLT)
Life is short. David asks God to remind him of how short his days are & how fleeting his life is. He also says that his life is just a moment to God. He says that all our busyness ends in nothing & we store up wealth for others to spend it.
What an encouraging & uplifting way to start a Psalm. Life is short, it's mostly for nothing, others will spend what you have saved, & nothing is worth putting your hope in. Great!
This is a sobering reminder & helpful for us to see. Life is short. We only have one life. We should want God to keep this on the forefront of our minds so that we live our lives for eternal things. In the midst of our busyness we must keep focus on what really matters. And so David's conclusion to all of this is to hope in the Lord! Should our activities be the place of our hope? Should our resources be the source of our hope? Should the length of our lives be the source of our hope?
None of these things can sustain the weight of human hope!
Life is short, we can't put our hope in it. We are here one moment & gone the next & none of us know the number of our days. We can't put our hope in activity because activity in & of itself does not make for a God-pleasing life. We can't put our hope in stuff because we can't take it with us & accumulating it will only result in others spending it.
The only true place to put our hope is in God. He is the only thing that can sustain the weight of human hope. He is the only one that can give us real hope in this life & in the one to come.
Where is our hope? Stuff? Activity? Us? If our hope isn't in God, life will only result in one disappointment after the other. But if we hope in God, we have everything we need.
