Day 124/365- 1 Chronicles 25:1

"Instruments of Praise"

David and the chiefs of the service also set apart for the service the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who prophesied with lyres, with harps, and with cymbals. The list of those who did the work and of their duties was: (1 Chronicles 25:1 ESV)

There's something about music. Music communicates something that regular words don't seem to convey. Music is as old as we are. Even a few thousand years ago we have David organizing music as part of the corporate worship of God's people. But why is music important to be a part of public worship?

I used to think that music in worship took a backseat to lyrics & the meditation of the heart. While these are of primary significance I've also come to realize the importance of music. Voices, strings, drums, & horns all play there role in worship of the Lord. In fact, Psalm 150 says to worship the Lord with every type of instrument imaginable! Even playing an instrument is an offering to the Lord. It's fulfilling part of what God called us to do in filling the earth & subduing it.

God makes order out of chaos. We are created in his image & in this way we have this innate desire to make order out of chaos. The carpenter takes a tree & shapes it into a desk. The bridge maker takes raw materials & makes a bridge. The musician takes random sounds & organizes them into music. Even the arranging of sounds in an organized way is a reflection of the Lord & gives him praise.

Only a God as great as ours could receive praise from organized sounds. Music directed to him is just as significant & meaningful as any other form of worship! So, go ahead, worship! Finally those piano lessons you took in 2nd grade are paying off!

I say all that to say, maybe the medium is the message. Maybe the medium is important just like the message. Everything is sacred. Even organized sounds. We should live our lives this way!
