"Even More Foolish"
David retorted to Michal, "I was dancing before the Lord , who chose me above your father and all his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the Lord , so I celebrate before the Lord . Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, even to be humiliated in my own eyes! But those servant girls you mentioned will indeed think I am distinguished!" (2 Samuel 6:21, 22 NLT)
The ark of the covenant is finally back in the capital. The people are celebrating the return of the visible representation of the presence of God among them. They couldn't be more excited. David throws a huge party to celebrate & he himself let's the celebration get to him. He is so overjoyed in the Lord that he begins dancing excitingly. So much so that his wife tells him he looks like an idiot. David's response is interesting. He says, "Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, even to be humiliated in my own eyes!"
I'm guessing baptists don't know this passage is in the Bible. For years they prohibited any form of dancing & here David is really cutting a rug. We may need to re-read our Bibles!
In fact, we may need to practice what our Bible teaches. David has a passion for God that could not be contained. His heart was so full of the joy of the Lord that he could not help but show it outwardly.
We need to realize this about ourselves. We need to film ourselves at football games jumping up & down, hands in the air, calling the hogs at the top of our voice (for hog fans), highfiving strangers all around us, & just in general acting foolish! Why? Because we love our team & we are committed to doing anything we can to help them win.
But something odd happens. The next day we make it to church. We come to worship half asleep. We mumble the songs, clap for half a verse, raise our hands at the bridge, listen to the message, & often leave the same person we did when we came in.
We get excited about teenagers throwing & catching balls but not as much about our Lord who died for us. We get excited about cheering on our team but not about rejoicing in our God & his salvation of our souls! I mean, who Jesus is & what he has done cannot even be compared to a sport can it? It's not even close. And yet we are willing to act foolish for sports but not for Christ.
Something doesn't add up here. I do it too. I get so emotionally invested in things & act foolish for them but won't take my hands out of my pockets in worship. How can it be? Maybe that reveals what I'm really worshipping?
Sometimes I think it would be good in church to have to tell people to cool it a bit. It would be neat to tell them to take it down a notch. We need more passion in our churches, more excitement, more fun, more celebration, & yes, more foolishness. Because Christ has saved us & he has called us to be on mission with him!
If we can't get exited enough about that to act foolish, we may want to check who we are worshipping!
