So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, "Up! Get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting. (Genesis 19:14)
What does it say about Lot that he seemed to be joking when it came to leaving Sodom & Gomorrah? He was so entrenched in the wicked city that he couldn't even convince his sons-in-law that they needed to flee the coming judgment. At one point, the angels have to drag Lot out of the city to get him to leave. In the midst of fleeing, Lot's wife turns back & loses her life. Did lot intend to get himself into this mess? When he was choosing which land to settle, did he consider that his choice would end in the loss of his wife?
Sin is something that desensitizes. What used to be absolutely wicked to us can over time become not so bad. Sin has desensitized us so much that we use words to describe it that aren't so harsh. "Telling a story" has replaced lying. Sex outside of marriage is just "doing what's natural". Two people living together outside of marriage has even become common place for people that call themselves Christians.
Over time, sin that is aloud to fester & take root in our lives will desensitize us. It won't seem as bad as it used to. It may even take us to the place that if we wanted to change, those around us would think we were joking.
I know this is true with me. I feel the Lord calling us back to the place where we call sin sin. And we can our sin sin. It's easy for me to hate the sins of others but do I hate my own? We point out the sinful lifestyles of those outside the church while we snuggle up to the ones inside of the church. As if pride, lying, cheating, silence, & hypocrisy was not sin.
What is it that we have surrounded ourselves with that is causing us to be calloused? Let's pray for God to take us by the hand & get us out of there no matter what!!
