“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” (Job 40:2)
"He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together."(Colossians 1:17)
Thirty-seven chapters into Job & God shows up. He is present in chapters 1 & 2 but nothing like this. It's almost like he sat back & listened to them argue for days. He let them try to figure it out. He let me see if they could makes sense of him & his work. Needless to say, they did not.
Job is literally interrogated by God. God asks Job a series of questions with a harshly sarcastic tone. On a side note, is being sarcastic part of the fall or being made in God's image? Just sayin.
What is striking about this exchange is how active God is in all creation. Colossians 1:17 says that he holds all creation together. We see this vividly displayed in Job. God asks Job where he was when he created the earth? Where was he when he laid the foundations of the earth? Was it Job who set the boundaries for the ocean?
God reveals himself as the glue that holds everything together. He tells the ocean how far to come. He finds food for the lioness to feed her family. He makes it rain! He is the creator & sustainer of all things. Without him, everything falls apart. He is active & sovereign over all the earth & it's processes. He is not aloof from his creation & what is going on in the world. Rather, we see an active God revealing his glory in everything he has created.
The God who is active in his creation is active also in his creatures. He is present & active in our lives even when we don't always see it. He created us & he is the glue that holds us together. The God that sets boundaries for the ocean know our limitations. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He is God, he is active in us even when we don't see it and he is holding all things, including us, together. If he provides food for the lion, will he not provide for us? If he is glorified in his creation will he not also be glorified his creatures, even if it means their suffering?
This inspires ceaseless wonder & praise. How is God holding us together & displaying his glory in our lives?
