And in the morning, behold, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?"(Genesis 29:25)
We reap what we sow. This is not only a practical truth for life, it's a Biblical one. The Bible is clear about this principle. We can rest assured that whatever we give our lives to will come back to us for sure. Decisions have consequences. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they are bad.
Jacob, the heel-grabber, the deceiver has been deceived. He got a dose of his own medicine. He deceived his brother out of his inheritance. He deceived his father for his brother's blessing. What goes around has now come around.
Jacob went back to his home town to look for a wife among his relatives by his father's request. He fell for his cousin Rachel very quickly. The Bible says that she was of good form & had a beautiful face. He was so head over heels for her that he agreed to work seven years for his uncle Laban in order to marry her. She must have been REALLY beautiful! The Bible says that he loved her so much that the seven years he worked in order to marry her seemed like just days. You didn't know the Bible could be so romantic did you?
They have a great wedding. It's comes time to consummate their marriage & life couldn't be better. Rachel enters the marriage bed (probably wearing a veil). The only problem is, it wasn't Rachel! It was her big sister Leah, who the Bible calls "weak eyed" or "without a sparkle in her eye." I'm not sure what that means but it can't be good!
Jacob, the great deceiver has been deceived! Laban tells Jacob that there is a custom in their country that the older daughter must marry before the younger. He agrees to give him Rachel in marriage as well if he agrees to work another seven years. Laban knew that Jacob was blessed by God. Everything he did prospered. Laban wanted to keep Jacob around and this is how he did it!
Jacob's deception came back to haunt him. The decisions that he made earlier in his life, came back to him full circle!
This is true for our lives as well.
Sometimes we get mad at God because of the things that are going on in our lives. We look at him and say, "How could you?" Sometimes I think he wants to ask us the same question. The Bible is clear, we reap what we sow. The question is, what are we sowing? Are we sowing seeds of righteousness? Godliness? Dependence on God? Walking with him? Trusting Christ? If so, we will reap the benefits of walking with him. Are we sowing seeds of godlessness? Neglecting his presence? Ignoring his commands? We can be sure that we will reap the consequences of these decisions as well.
Let's resolve ourselves to sowing seeds now that will reap all that the Lord wants for us in Christ this year.
